The Owning Up™ curriculum asks educators and students to look at one's own community and admit that the root causes of violence exist within it. Regardless of resources, geography, test scores, or where your students go to college, all communities are part of the larger culture and, as such, incorporate to some extent the culture's criteria for who has power and privilege. What we have found time and time again is that the safety of the school is not determined by its neighborhood, but by the adults in the community who hold themselves and youth accountable for how power and privelege relate to unethical, cruel, dehumanizing, and bullying behavior.
The Owning Up™ curriculum addresses these extremely difficult issues in our society, and naturally, it can make people uncomfortable. It takes an extraordinary school, organization, or community to commit itself to addressing these issues. While we all want our students to be safe and healthy, creating strategies that truly enable this to happen takes moral courage, perseverance, and commitment.
